Peppol e-invoicing: is it free of charge?
Read in 3 minutes
Starting from 2026, all self-employed individuals will need to send their invoices electronically in a specific format. This is slightly more complex than simply updating an Excel or Word file, so both sole traders and companies will need new software, advice, and access to Peppol. But is Peppol free, and how much will e-invoicing cost a self-employed professional? We looked into it for you.
What is Peppol?
As a self-employed professional, you will soon need to create, send, receive, and process all invoices to other businesses digitally in a structured format. This is known as e-invoicing, which is carried out via the international Peppol network.
Thanks to this network, e-invoices can be exchanged quickly and securely in a standardized manner.
Is Peppol invoicing free?
If it’s up to Accountable, yes.
To send and receive e-invoices, you need invoicing software. There’s a wide range of options available in the Belgian market, but since being self-employed already comes with enough challenges, e-invoicing and Peppol are free with Accountable.
This means that:
- Your Peppol registration is free of charge. This can be done quickly and easily via our app.
- You can send and receive Peppol invoices for free through Accountable, even with the free plan.

Temporary increased deduction for e-invoicing costs
There’s even more good news. Since e-invoicing can sometimes involve costs—such as purchasing a paid software subscription or seeking advice from an accountant—a temporary increased deductibility has been introduced for these expenses.
In short: all e-invoicing-related costs are currently 120% tax-deductible.
Specifically, for e-invoicing, you are entitled to 120% tax deduction for advice and software costs. This rule applies to invoicing programs that allow you to create, send, and receive e-invoices in the required structured format.
💡 Accountable tip: The purchase or amortization of an accounting package is not 120% deductible. The rule only applies to software with a subscription, such as Accountable.
When does this temporary measure take effect?
The 120% tax deduction for e-invoicing applies from 1 January 2024, therefore impacting the tax year 2025 onwards. This temporary change to Article 64ter is set to expire on 1 January 2028.
Hence, from the tax year 2029 onwards, the enhanced deduction for these expenses will no longer be available.
Who benefits from the increased tax deduction?
The 120% tax deduction applies to both personal income tax and corporate income tax. It is available for self-employed individuals (natural persons), liberal professions, and certain companies. The rule does not apply to companies that do not meet the definition of a small company.
Why was this measure introduced?
E-invoicing is set to become mandatory to boost efficiency and transparency in business transactions across the EU. By 1 January 2026, it will be compulsory for all Belgian companies to adopt e-invoices for B2B transactions.
Given that many businesses currently lack the required software, a temporary support measure has been implemented.
