What’s the best invoicing software for freelancers?
Read in 4 minutes
As well as making invoicing tasks easier, good invoicing software also lets you automate follow-up and payments. That gives you more time to devote to your most important work. But what’s the best invoicing program for freelancers? Here, we compare what’s on offer.
- Benefits of invoicing software
- Criteria to consider when choosing invoicing software
- Comparison of the best invoicing programs in Belgium
The benefits of invoicing software
The main advantage of an invoicing program is saving time. Invoicing software lets you create invoices easily and much more quickly, thanks to invoice templates. Compared to manual invoicing, you can save a lot of time each and every month.
Invoicing programs offer many other benefits too:
- Fewer errors. For example, invoicing software keeps the numbering of your invoices correct and calculates the VAT rate for each invoice, all automatically.
- Professional-looking invoices. Most invoicing programs allow you to customise your invoices with your own logo, font, and colours. This gives your invoices a highly professional look.
- Faster payments. Many invoicing programs let you add a QR code or online payment link to your invoice, making it easier for your customers to pay.
- An automated invoicing process. Features like automatic reminders for unpaid invoices and integrations with accounting software help you keep a clear overview and use your time more efficiently.
- Legally compliant invoices. With invoicing software, your invoices are always correct and contain all the legally required information.
What to keep in mind when choosing invoicing software
To choose the best invoicing program for your self-employed activity, there are some essential features to look out for:
- Electronic invoicing or e-invoicing: this new, fast and error-free invoicing method will be mandatory for all self-employed people in Belgium from 1 January 2026. So it’s best to choose invoicing software that already allows you to send and receive electronic invoices.
💡 How do you know if invoicing software already has e-invoicing? If it does, there will be a ‘Peppol integration’ feature, which allows you to send invoices securely via the Peppol network.
- Recurring invoices: Do you have a long-term mission for which you send the same invoice every month? Then make sure to choose an invoicing program that lets you set up recurring invoices. Often, you can even set it up so the invoice is sent to your client automatically. More time saved!
- Customisable templates: These allow you to choose your font, colours and logo so your invoices look highly professional.
- Connection with your bank account: By synchronising your bank account with your invoicing software, you spend much less time checking up on your invoices. Incoming payments are automatically linked to your invoices, which are then marked as ‘paid’.
- Do you often send invoices to customers located abroad? If that’s the case, check if your invoicing software supports multiple currencies.
